This is a topic which has long troubled me. I strongly agree with Mike's
concern, but specifying it turns out to be quite difficult, as responses to
Mike have demonstrated.
Archetypal examples to me are:
* the person who uses a calculator to do (EG) 99 x 101 and accept their
answer of 1089 (they missed the 0 in 101), because they really have no
concept not only of multiplication, but number, and
* the person who gets a flat car battery in the middle of the night in the
countryside, (EG) but because they have no idea about the role the battery
plays in running the car, can only call for help.
It is easy to think of fundamental knowledge that we don't need, and
measures to ensure survival of a nuclear attack which overstate the need
for self-reliance, but surely it is self-evident that we need to have a
certain sufficient understanding of the tools we use, be they tools for
thought or any other kind of tool.
It is not just having an alternative if something goes wrong. I think you
need some measure of understanding what the tool is doing for you.
