It is a term I picked up from reading Oliver Sacks who is a prominant
neurologist and I consider to follow in the tradition of Luria's romantic
science. It is a word that speaks more specific to those who have
difficulty forming higher psychological functions. During the course of my
teaching I do use the'politically correct' terminology; which by the way,
changes all too frequently.

Eric,
It sounds like you have experience working with 'retardates' (sic). I am
not used to hearing people who work in public schools refer to students
that way, no matter their level of development. Could you expand on what
you mean by retardates within whatever context you were referring to in the
note below. Also, could you say more about the contexts or situations where
you think there is a place for IQ testing.
