Try googling "reading workshop" and "writing workshop", or some combination,
and possibly authors irene fountas, gay pinnell, or marie clay, for some
literacy workshop models in fairly wide use at the elementary level.

A book in which a first grade teacher writes about her practices is "And with
a Light Touch: Learning about Reading, Writing, and Teaching with First
Graders" by Carol Avery, who was also pres of NCTE. Avery's book is very
similar to what I've seen in first grade and what my students, those who are
elementary teachers, tell me of their practices.
