It would be wonderful to find out about a study that actually analyzes the
positive educational impacts of integrating children. What would you analyze
-- test scores? That's part of the problem.

Kozol's stuff is great (how can you write about this without writing as an
advocate?) The de-tracking stuff is good. Mike Rose's Lives on the Boundary
might make the list. There's a new book, Dancing on Live Embers: Challenging
racism in organizations, Lopes and Thomas, from Between-the-Lines in
Toronto. But the emphasis in most research is on the benefits of integrated
educational opportunities AFTER difference has been created.

Bill, I would very much like to hear how you develop your dissertation. This
would be a wonderful contribution. How are you going to frame your question?

Dear Bill--

While this is more public advocacy than research, you may want to look at
Jonathan Kozol's new book "The Shame of the Nation: The Restoration of
Apartheid Schooling in America"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1400052440/qid=1142102210/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1
/103-2796155-3043810?s=books&v=glance&n=283155. He's recently spoken
tirelessly about the need to desegregate public schooling in the U.S.,
particularly to teachers.

I do not know of such research unless the de-tracking studies fit the bill.
Let me forward this query to XMCA our discussion list.
