Dear Mike
Based on Mind in Society (ed M Cole et al 1978) my understanding has been
that Vygotsky did not envisage a linear progression between phylogeny and
ontogeny; rather he appears to suggest (eg 1978: p 46, and elsewhere) a
dialectic "The history of child behaviour is born from the interweaving of
these two lines" [i.e. bio- and socio-genetic, RH]. I can't lay my fingers
on it at the moment but there is a splendid discussion of the two lines in
dialectic, moving in a spiral rather than linear manner. I am sure you will
know where it is.

Subject: Query Re Genetic Domains

Dear Colleagues,

It is my impression that lot of people, following Vygotsky (summarized in
Wertsch, 1985) have made the programmatic claim that human ontogeny is the
emergent outcome of phylogenetic, cultural historical, and moment by moment
(microgenetic) processes.

I am looking for references that include this kind of rhetoric. I recal, but
cannot find, that Ronald Tharp once wrote on this topic. Yrjo's book on
learning by expanding certainly adopts this point of view. and......??

Suggestions needed!
mike
