PUBLIC LECTURE by Tzvetan TODOROV

The Bakhtin Centre and Department of French at the University of
Sheffield, together with the Institut Français, take great pleasure in
informing you that the 2004 French Embassy Lecture will be
delivered
by Tzvetan Todorov, who will speak on

‘The Replacement of Ethics by Aesthetics’

Over the past thirty years Tzvetan Todorov has emerged as a
major thinker in the humanities. From his introduction of the
Russian Formalists' work to French intellectual circles in the mid-
1960s to his recent book on totalitarianism, his work has covered a
wide range of subjects, including poetics, narratology, semiotics,
rhetoric, French humanist thought, history, culture, and
anthropology, and has engaged with such issues as the possibility
of a science of literature, the notion of alterity, morality and ethics,
displacement, memory, democracy, etc. He has introduced Roman
Jakobson to a French readership and made a major contribution to
the understanding of the works of Mikhail Bakhtin and the Bakhtin
Circle; as a result of his engagement with Bakhtin's thought, he
has developed a practice of 'dialogic criticism'. His many
publications include _The Fantastic: A Structural Approach to a
Literary Genre_; _The Poetics of Prose_; _Mikhail Bakhtin: The
Dialogical Principle_; _The Conquest of America: The Question of
the Other_; _Literature and its Theorists: A Personal View of
Twentieth-Century Criticism_; _Facing the Extreme: Moral Life in
the Concentration Camps_; _The Morals of History_; _A French
Tragedy: Scenes of Civil War, Summer 1944_; and _Hope and
Memory: Reflections on the Twentieth Century_. He has also
written books on Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Benjamin Constant, and
French humanism.
