Re movies. I am certain there are different national traditions and the
contrasts you and Bakhtin make resonate positively with me. We were
using history and context in different ways -- nasty old polysemy again! :-)
The general topic of comparative film analysis is fascinating, but unfortunately, I do not know enough other traditions in sufficient detail to comment.
