RE: [UD-PIG] Cellphone literature

Dear Martin-

Thanks for the explanation and for dictionary. Next time when I go to South
Africa, I'll document sms exchanges. SMS discourse is fascinating! I noticed
that SMSing by "wise people" (my euphemism for "old people" :-)) in South
Africa is very different than by young people. You are right that it affects
other spheres. For example, I noticed that some big ads on billboards in
Pretoria have SMS messages that are probably broadly understood by SA people
(some homeless people is South Africa have cellular phones) but not by me.
My SMS illiteracy was an object of many jokes among my diverse South African
friends ("professor who can't read and write"). :-(

Dear Eugene,

I'm glad it made some kind of sense to you. As well as being in the opposite
(related) dilemma of yours, I still remember experiencing the exact same
thing when first starting to go about sending sms and then again later with
the introduction of the dictionary as it uses a completely different set of
operating mechanisms.

I completely agree that the langue and syntax of the sms aren't similar to
that you see in e-mail and Internet chat, but as I see it the sms has
actually changed the way of communicating on chat boards in Denmark adding a
different kind or generation of abbreviation and practices. Unfortunately I
don't know research to back me up so this stands as my postulate (as much as
I hate it).

Unfortunately I haven't been smsing in English, so I really can't give you a
representative example of a conversation. I don't even think I am proficient
enough to give you one in Danish, as with the introduction of the dictionary
I've gone back to writing (almost) normal text simply because it's faster. I
just pay that extra to send another message - speed over money (the phone
companies has even "helped" in this by making it possible to write several
messages in the same screen, then it is first when you send the sms, you see
that instead of sending only one you are sending three! (to trice the
cost)).

What I can give you are the most common abbreviations in Danish they can be
found at a Danish telephone operator's site:
x.jsp>
http://www.tdcmobil.dk/portal/privat/produkter_services/sms/sms_ordbog/index
.jsp

and a quick search on Google *sms dictionary* came up with this link which
can give some insight

http://www.zdnetindia.com/biztech/services/sms/stories/35520.html (included
below).

I know it's not much help to you Eugene, but maybe for those of you who
haven't experienced it yourself.

Best

Martin
