Yes, part of what makes the film so fascinating is its depiction of an
enormous range of practices, the way in which winning the national contest
becomes central to kids' identities, the differential involvement of families.
That the poor kids could make it at all was amazing, given the clear
material and sociocultural variations in resources. The film was exceptional
in its respectful depiction of the diversity of this country, good, bad, and
indifferent.
