Mike this looks like an important study that deals with informal math/sci
education but implicates schooling and its efficacy. I recommend Journal
for Research in Mathematics Education as the premier math ed research
journal.

Thanks for all the good suggestions re an article on afterschool
math/science
work.

The bottom line: great things happen, but the organizational structure of
the institution has been insufficient to make a sustainable activity with
shared responsibility plausible. Seeing 7 year olds teach basic principles
to college students who have passed the course that is supposed to teach
them those principles is instructive, and depressing.... and life.
