Here is an additional proposal. Some subset of us attend AERA and that helps
putting faces to names, but too often little real dialogue goes on. You
listen to a paper, maybe stay and chit chat, occasionally more, but not
usually. A group that I belong to (yes, I would even call it a community!)
rents a large suite every year at AERA. Among the things we do is have
social occasions where there is a free for all between whomever is there (ye
old cocktail party) and also more formal "paper" sessions where papers in an
early development stage or just half baked are presented and discussed in
small group in a comfortable setting. Graduate students in our group often
take advantage of this but "full fledged" academics do so as well. I have
often used the sessions to try out some ideas. I would need to clear it with
my suite mates, but I think I could offer you the use of the suite for a
couple of hours. Of course, some one would have to take charge, do a little
organizational work, solicit papers, etc.

Just a thought.............djc

ALong with Diane I rally behind the idea, and like Mike's suggestion of
designated time for student questions. Then the needs/means related to the
other suggestion, mentor relationships, might develop from that.
