gosh.

there's a difference between being aware of the limitations in cultural
studies,
and the assumptions or presumptions that eclipse the possibilities of
difference
and ignorance in cultural studies.
each perspective points to humility, learning... and while these aren't
especially
valued in scholarship, that's not to say it wouldn't improve cultural
studies eh?
it is never about silence,
but more about particular kinds of listening.

for example, as interesting/perplexing.disturbing as i imagine black
ghettos to be,
i'd never presume to study them. i'd read from others who have,
and give preference to black scholars, when possible.

similarly, i'd never presume that someone like bell hooks could understand
white suburban lesbian life,
but that's not to say i'd never consider that her critiques have no value.

open minds mean POSSIBILITY and LIMITATIONS.

gosh. the canons are not discarded, dear, they still determine the
methods.
no one is really threatened here, not pragmatically.

but to think differently, sure, that's a challenge. for me, you, for all
of us.
i learn a lot about my own limitations by participating in this list,
reading what others do, admiring them for their accomplishments.

a difference of perspective is critical, yes? to the advancement of new
ideas?
new research? new perspectives>
