300 YEARS OF MATHEMATICAL EDUCATION IN RUSSIA

The professional mathematical education began in Russia in 1701 when Peter
 the First decreed the foundation of the School of Mathematical and
Navigational sciences which was working in Suhareva Tower. Mathematics in
this school was taught by L.F.Magnitsky, the first professional teacher of
mathematics and the author of the first Russian manual of mathematics.
 In connection with the anniversary some arrangements are projected to
carry out:
 Internet Conference which will help many people to find each other;
 some editions timed to the anniversary;
 meeting of the former pupils of physico-mathematical schools in
 Moscow.
           In honor of this important event the "300 Years of Mathematical
Education in Russia" International Conference is taking place in the
Moscow Palace of Child Education at the Vorobjev hills in December, 16,
2001 at 16.00.
The Conference program is supposed to have discussion and historical
analysis of the different periods of mathematics history in Russia from
Peter time to modern Olympiads. Expected total number of participants is
about 300 with including teachers of the secondary schools and the former
pupils of physico-mathematical schools from Russia and other countries.
This meeting is considered to promote the international cooperation in a
matter of common concern of young people education.
The Conference is supported by Moscow Committee of Education, Moscow
Center of Continuos Mathematical Education, Moscow Independent University
and other organizations. The Organizing Committee headed by its Chairman N.
Konstantinov is waiting for corroboration of readiness of the former
pupils of physico-mathematical schools to meet in Moscow. All the proposals
on subjects, reports and financial support will be considered with
gratitude. Some Conference documents are supposed to be published.
