I have had requests from several people to put Construction Zone on our web
page because it is "out of print." See message below from CUP. It is not
out of print and should remain available.

Dear Professor Cole,

Please allow me to introduce myself. I am the new psychology editor at =
Cambridge University Press. Julia Hough told me that she spoke to you at =
the SRCD meeting in Minnesota last week. She mentioned that you were =
interested in converting your 1989 CUP book "The Construction Zone" to .=
pdf files and putting on your website.

You might be surprised to know that the paperback edition is still in =
print (though the hc went out of print in 1993). Since the book still =
sells, I would prefer to convert it to a "Lightning Print" (digital =
reprint) edition. You may have heard that Cambridge signed a deal with =
Ingram a few years back to digitize many of our back list titles. The book=
s we target for digital reprinting generally sell fewer than 100 copies =
per year and would not be good candidates for traditional reprinting (=
which typically requires a minimum order of 350 copies). With digital =
technology, we can reprint in batches of 25 and still maintain the current =
price. The book itself will be virtually indistinguishable from a =
traditional reprint and will retain the same page design and cover.

One of our biggest success stories in the area is another "Learning in =
Doing" title, Lucy Suchman's "Plans and Situated Action" which was brought =
back to life through digital technology two years ago and has sold an =
additional 800+ copies.

So I would prefer to go this route. However, I would encourage you to =
include a link on your website to the book's page on the cambridge website.=

best,
Philip Laughlin
