Professor Cole is one of the most renowned scholars of our time. His
research focuses on the role of culture in human development. This
interest works itself out in such areas as the study of culturally
mediated learning and development in children and mediational
theories of mind. His numerous awards include Honorary Doctorate from
Copenhagen University, recipient of the Distinguished Contributions
to Educational Research Award from AERA, Fellow of the American
Academy of Arts & Sciences, Member of the National Academy of
Education, Fellow of the American Psychological Association. He has
published nearly 200 articles in major journals, edited volumes, and
single volume works. Among his numerous publications are The
Development of Children (1989) and Cultural Psychology (1996). He is
the author or editor of 13 books. His works have been translated into
Russian, German, Italian, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Portuguese.
He has been one of the major figures to bring to the United States
the work of the Soviet school of psychology represented by Lev
Vygotsky and Alexander Luria, influencing a major focus in studies of
learning and development on the role of context and culture. He is
currently helping to shape a re-positioning of the field of the
cognitive sciences toward a model that incorporates multiple levels
of context.
