Hello everybody--

I'm on the search committee for the two literacy positions (see below). We
have a rather unique situation in our School of Education to try new
approaches for teacher education program. With joining new faculty recently,
we have now "critical mass" of faculty members how are interested in new
approaches such as sociocultural, activist education, community-based
education, and problem-based education, building educational community, and
team teaching. With support from the School administration, we are working
on developing innovative pilot teacher education programs and individual
classes. If you know people who want to try something new, exciting, and
interesting in literacy teacher education, please, pass them the job ad
below.

Let me know if you have questions,

Eugene

research related to cultural diversity and urban contexts, intervention to
prevent and correct reading difficulties, and/or literacy instruction for
non-native speakers of English. A commitment to engage in collaborative work
with faculty in Urban Studies, Family Policy and other units within the
College and across the University is also desirable.

Major responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses
in areas such as reading, writing, content area literacy, and literacy in
socio-cultural and linguistic contexts; advising masters and doctoral
students with emphases in literacy; and participating in ongoing program
efforts to promote teacher education research and reform through
interdisciplinary collaboration and school-community-university
partnerships. At least one position will carry a paid appointment with the
Delaware Center for Teacher Education. Potential responsibilities for this
position will include engaging in ongoing professional development
opportunities with local teachers, designing and providing inservice
instruction, and designing school and University partnerships for
scholarship and research.

With over 1,000 undergraduates, 300 graduate students, and 50 faculty, the
School of Education is the largest academic unit in the College of Human
Services, Education, and Public Policy. University of Delaware's teacher
education program focuses on preparing students and teachers to be
reflective practitioners through their roles as scholars, problem solvers,
and partners. There is a growing interest in innovative education,
community- and problem-based teacher education, and learning through
activism.

Required qualifications for both positions include: an earned doctorate in
literacy or a related field, evidence of scholarly promise, and evidence of
a capacity to contribute to the intellectual, research and instructional
life of the School, The College, and the University. Public school teaching
experience in Grades K-12 is also strongly desired.

teaching evaluations, two scholarly papers, and three letters of reference
to: Kathleen Minke, Ph.D. and Gwynne Ellen Ash, Ph.D., Literacy Search
