Communication Department and Center for Research on Educational Equity
and Teaching Excellence (CREATE) dual affiliation

[[ posted September, 2000 ]]

The UCSD Department of Communication plans to appoint a senior faculty member (Associate Professor to Professor) starting with the 2001-2002 academic year. The appointee will hold a dual affiliation with the Communication Department and UCSD's new Center for Research on Educational Equity and Teaching Excellence (CREATE). The Department of Communication is an interdisciplinary department with a faculty drawn from a variety of social science and humanities fields. Its distinguished faculty (5 Guggenheim Fellows and other award winners) come together in their research and teaching interest in the various media of communication, including language, print, film and theater, broadcasting as well as web/internet/information technology. CREATE is a new academic unit whose mission includes improving education and educational opportunity in San Diego. The Communication/CREATE faculty member would be a full member of the Communication Department. His or her CREATE affiliation would mean teaching at least one course per year that supports CREATE as part of normal teaching responsibilities in the Communication Department. It would also be expected that the faculty member would undertake research in connection with one or more of CREATE's partner K-l2 schools in San Diego. We especially seek scholars who study communication processes in relation to diversity and equity issues. This interest can be expressed in a variety of theoretical and empirical domains, including the influence of race, class, gender and national identity on educational achievement, technology as a transforming and stratifying practice, communication practices in classrooms, schools, and communities.
