Concerning Mike's post of the Wallace Steven's poem
The resemblance was uncanny. Yrjo’s conceptualisation of the object in his
Activity triangles had the same quality of striving towards some distant and
indistinct horizon of being that I got from the poem, and it was through the
interaction with that object that sense and meaning were made by humans.
The major theme of the talk we went to at the new centre at Birmingham
University was expansive learning. Yrjo drew on Gregory Bateson to work
towards an understanding of this (I am loathe to use the word define) and
then exemplified what he meant by talking about his Finnish health research.
During the talk he showed how he was combining activity systems, which was
especially exciting for me, as I have been struggling for months with just
that problem. Much food for thought!
Uncannily, he still looks the same as when I first saw him in San Diego when
you organised the CHAT programme before the AERA conference. Is that three
years ago now? Without doubt the most influential two days of my life as an
educational researcher as we are now building a programme of research on
work related learning using Activity Theory. I hope tod develop close links
with the Birmingham centre asa result.
