Paul, the organization was called "Group d'Information sur les Prisons".
it was founded February, 1971.
the aim of the group was not reform, but dissemination of information
about the prison system. GIP distributed questionairres to anyone with
any knowledge of the system: prisoners, ex-prisoners, social workers,
judges, etc.
the work of Gauche Proletarienne was happening at the same time, and
Daniel Defert became involved directly with that organization.
GIP was not of a single political unity - christians, maoists and
nonaligned individuals worked together, or example.
GIP's primary goal was to make public information and alert public
opinion to conditions in prison.
