Renee asked me to forward the following message since her computer troll in
Spain did not allow to send it to whole xmca. Afterwards my brief reply to
her question.

Eugene,

You gave an example of an African-American teenager challenging the idea of
identity.

well, you referenced Bill Penuel...

"I have read several studies from my friend Bill Penuel where
African-American teenagers from poor neighborhood reject the notion of
identity"

Can you say more about what is the notion of identity he is challenging,
what is his definion instead (by "he" I mean Bill, but I guess what I am
really interested in is what does Bill find is the way this teenager thinks
about identity)

And can you give a specific reference for Penuel?

Hi Renee--

As far as I remember, he didn't I did. Bill just said that they were
uncomfortable with identity that other people tried to give them. I
disagreed with this interpretation and argued that they had rejected the
notion of identity per se.

Here is the reference

Penuel, W. R. (1996, March). “That’s how they signify me”: Identifying
voices in youth organizations. Paper presented at the American Association
for Applied Linguistics conference, Chicago, IL.

I don't know if it was published since then.

Eugene
