I am learning a great deal from the Jensen critiques. The following
quote from Braudel is one way of thinking about the current discussion:

For Braudel, by contrast, there is no unilateral history, as there are
no abstract individuals. Instead
a 'fleeting spectacle' is always in movement; 'a web of problems' is
meshed together able to assume 'a
hundred different and contradictory aspects in turn.' (Lechte, 1994, p.
90)
