Rachel,

I agree with you concerning the reactions of white males; not only or even
primarily middle class white males (which characterization is more
essential) but more centrally, working class males. But then from a world
perspective, american working class males are part of the global upper class
in terms of the benefits they enjoy. Of the four elements of an economic:
production, distribution, exchange, and consumption, distribution is key to
what one might call "class" identification -- e.g., the peasants mobilized
to demonstrate against workers in Paris 1848-1851.

But the the middle class and working class white males aren't the ones I was
thinking of when I said "who should know better". I was thinking of the
psychology professors such as the author of mike's last forward who claim to
be taking a middle road, a balanced perspective, or whatever. What kind of
selective blindness allows them to ignore the very obvious realities you
articulate? I suppose I can provide my own answers to this question but
would be interested to know yours, or anyone else's for that matter.

Paul H. Dillon
