more time scales

Jay wrote (in small part)

Organizations can in some
sense be much more stupid than individuals, though if we transpose this
observation to ecosystems vs, organisms, I wonder if we would still agree?
The problem may lie in the nature of our organizations, rather than in
their scale

When Jay gave his talk here we discussed the fact that what appears to be
a longer, "slower moving" time scale may in fact speed up vis a vis your
level of experience. Figure and ground can reverse themselves. We this
very clearly right now in our 5thDimension work. What really knocks me
over is that at the "mesogenetic" level of month by month, year by
year, interaction with/in a system it seems that I can both feel myself
and collect routine comments from those around me in different parts of
the system that right now one of our consituent parts has "slowed down"
precipitously. Other parts want to go fast. I am feeling good that "they"
slowed down" because "we" are in a period of rapid transformation and
need to stabilize, or else when they get "up to speed" we will not
be able to handle the resulting transformation.

Building on something that Honorine Nocon said to me locally, it appears
that we need to think of heterochrhoous units from a point of view and
be clear about what that point of view is. Or, perhaps, we should try to
do our analsysis from "both sides now," a la Yutaka Sayeki's kubitos
engaged in conversation with each other.
