Dear Mike -

Thanks for the suggestion about Cynthia Lightfoot's book. It
really is good. And I appreciate your comments as well. It is a sticky
issue to look at reasons for "at riskness" and try to prioritize them;
these days, in some sense, it does seem that every child is "at risk" for
something.

Perhaps it will take the majority of children in schools - or more
children from dominant social groups - becoming at risk for school failure
to motivate us to reshape and change the structure of schools. Or perhaps
added flexibility in the school structure is a possible approach. Or
perhaps schools are not really about educating all children ... Feeling a
bit cynical today. Hope it's not contagious.
