Well well, I was wondering if or when XMCA would finally succumb to a
posting sequence such as the one we've all just lived through. On every
other listserv I've subscribed to, four so far, there has always been a
cycle like this one, followed by a large number of requests to unsubscribe
(I was sure sorry to see B onnie Nardi leave), followed by explicit
(re)negotiation of purpose. In each case the listserv core group eventually
picks up and continues on, apparently without much ado, until the next such
sequence. I've been on two listservs long enough to see the event cycle
recur much to the consternation of the "old timers" on the list, who
generally sit back and wait for it to pass when it recurs.

On the other hand, this list seems very different, imho, than others I've
participated in: the presence of a "core group" of folks who seem to know
each other much more personally and for a greater length of time and
represent a greater proportion of the total subscription group, and a
periphery not so loaded with transients. (This group's also a lot more
civil about it all.) Of course, I could be wrong about those assumptions.

I'm wondering about listservs as a medium for dialogue... why it seems to
occasion periodic eruptions in which folks argue and defend meaning with
such fervor and personal investment.

I suppose this is all simply due to my current work analyzing the online
workings of our graduate community in ed. tech. I'm a little hypervigilant
about cycles... ;-)
