Education is a provincial responsibility in Canada. In some provinces
there are several sectarian school systems each publicly supported. In
some provinces private Jewish schools get public funding. In Quebec of
course there are two factors: language and "confession" so there are
French Catholic, English Catholic etc. Religion is often part of all
schools in Canada but on the other hand curriculum and level of teacher
certification is controlled by the Provincial government for all
schools. It makes a difference that Canadian teachers have a high level
of professional education and have been the best paid in the world
(though my Canadian friends tell me that is slipping). Canadian
education has more of a commitment to heritage languages. In Alberta
there are schools that teach English, French, Hebrew and Yiddish for
example.
