the evolving triad

greetings,

i am working on a conceptual framework that blends feminist theories of
identity with CHAT and have discovered a confusion i didn't realize that i
had concerning the activity system triangle.

in the earliest versions of the triangle, Vygotsky related a stimulus to a
response through a mediating link like this

stimulus - response
\ /
mediating link

in later versions of the triangle, a subject and an object are related
through a tool and it looks more like this

tool
/ \
subject - object/ive

my confusion concerns the move from stimulus and response to subject and
object.

if the response becomes named as the object of the activity, how does the
stimulus transform into the subject? what are some reasons or alternative
readings for this transformation?
because i am especially interested in identity, i would like more
information on the meaning of the subject within an activity system.

thanx,

kathie
