It's interesting how "old timers" continue to visualize
the original community even when the present one has
been completely reconstituted. Is that a feature of
e-mail discussion lists with their large lurker population
of the "unseen?" Or is it a more general conserving mechanism?

I'm Kate Garretson--a listener/lurker but a big fan of xmca.
I teach at The City University of New York, at Kingsborough
Community College, in the developmental English division of the
English Department -- academic literacies, especially for
ESL students. My interest is in the relationship between
theories of language and literacy and how they match up with
classroom practices (or don't). . and with all the ways a
social and culturally embedded model complicates our understanding
of what we do when we "teach" reading or writing -- or
anything else. Xmca keeps the issues alive for me in what
is a very busy schedule during the term. So thank you to all
who participate actively. And maybe I'll be able to join
the discussion one of these days -- no excuses for me, either!

cheers to all!
