harnassing diversity

The cognitive model underlying the metaphor of "harnassing diversity"
stricks me as worth thinking about. Clearly diversity is constitutive
of life systems, and humans are no exception, so the drive to "make
it go away" is misguided in principle. Better to somehow "use its
energy" (I assume that harnasses are ordinarily put on horses to
control their engergy on your behalf."

What is the energy in diversity that it could be harnassed?
