Ellice, I stand corrected. But I think he was a Middle-Westerner too,
and moved by the same exasperations as Mencken was. Veblen turned out to
be all too right in his fears of majority rule producing mediocrity. But
now I think we've stood Babbitt on his head, and the taboo nowadays is to
be too conventional, rebellion is de riguer, and not to be in-your-face
is proof positive that one is not a serious thinking person. When was
the last time you met someone who admitted to being happy?
