Incidentally, being from Ohio I consider Mencken a compatriot (along with
James Thurber, of course, not to mention Mark Twain). The Middle-West
has a long tradition not only of being determinedly stodgy but also of
producing its own loyal opposition. Or maybe in Mencken's case, disloyal
opposition. (A very Marxian duality, but who then is the synthesis?)
Compared to him, W.C. Fields was your kindly old uncle and Rousseau a
non-starter. I think he wrote "The Devil's Dictionary," which is great
reading on days when temporary misanthropy has set in.
