The Interamerican Society of Psychology (ISP) announces the XXVIIth
Interamerican Congress of Psychology to be held in Caracas, Venezuela
(June 27 - July 2, 1999).

As this will be our last congress of the milenia, we want it to
represent a celebration of American unity and an opportunity to assess
the state of psychology in our continent over the past 100 years. We
also want it to represent a forum for discussing new modes of
professional practice, new ways of interpreting and explaining
psychological phenomena, and new areas of application. Therefore, the
scientific program contemplates the participation of distinguished
psychologists from the A mericas and some outstanding scholars from
other parts of the world.

Scientific program
-------------------
Conferences:Distinguished psychologists will be invited to deliver
addresses representing most branches of psychology. Each conference
will be 45 minutes in duration, followed by a 15-minute discussion.

Central symposia: There will be invited central symposia which will
deal with general topics such as pychology in the Americas during the
20th century, and new methodological, theoretical and applied trends
in psychology. Each central symposium will last three hours, with 30
minutes per participant and the rest of the time for discussion.

Symposia: Up to five participants from different countries will
discuss their research on a specific topic. The duration of each
symposium will be two hours, with 20 minutes per participant and the
rest of the time for discussion, coordinated by the symposium
organizer.

Thematic sessions: Presentations centered on a single topic will be
organized into two-hour sessions. Each session will consist of a
maximum of six participants, with 15 minutes per participant and the
rest of the time for discussion.

Posters: Graphic displays of information, usually reporting empirical
research, chaired by experts on the area. At the end of each poster
session, participants will have the oportunity to speak about their
posters for a maximum of five minutes, followed by a general
discussion moderated by the chair of the session. A special poster
session will be reserved for psychology students (graduate and
undergraduate) an ideal oportunity for graduate students of psychology
who may want to pr esent and receive feedback on their thesis
projects.

Workshops: Interactive activities directed towards acquiring and/or
updating skills in specific technical or didactic areas of psychology.
Duration: two hours. Permission for longer time must be requested to
the Scientific Committee.

Audiovisual presentations: Presentations of programs or psychological
services, as well as didactic, scientific, educational or
computational material concerning psychology.

Conversation hours: Attendants will have the opportunity to discuss
specific topics topics in psychology with distinguished scholars.

Round Table Discussions : Informal discussion among a maximum of four
experts on specific psychological issues. The round table organizer
will chair the discussion. Duration: 2 hours.

Surprise activities: There will be invited daily activities of high
impact, which could be performative or participative, and will always
be innovative that would provide participants with a few moments of
relaxation.

Contributions
-------------
Professionals fron any branch of psychology--or related disciplines
--can send theoretical or empirical proposals for the Scientific
Program. The Scientific Committee will evaluate each proposal on the
basis of clarity, quality, and relevance. An individual may be
included in no more than three presentations, either as a presenting
author or co-author. Proposals posted after the deadline will not be
considered. Proposals should be sent according to the instructions of
the special form, in any of the official languages of the Congress
(Spanish, English, Portuguese, or French).

Tourism
-------
Caracas offers cultural activities as well as outdoor attractions in
nearby mountains and beaches. Also, being the capital city, it
provides easy access from the Simon Bolivar Airport in Maiquetia to
most points of interest throughout the country. Tours at special rates
for Congress attendants include trips to Margarita Island, the Amazon
Jungle with three to five-day visits to the camps of Canaima and
Kavak, which are located on the banks of migh ty rivers and in the
vicinity of the famous "Tepuys", the oldest mountains of the world.
Tours also include trips to Los Roques archipelago and to the town of
Carupano on the mainland, with easy access to the Playa Medina resort.
Ecological tours to "haciendas" in "los llanos"(the savanahs) will
also be scheduled for participants who want to can enjoy bird-watching
and nature walks. Also, the city of Merida can be reached from the
Simon Bolivar Airport, thus providing an opportunity to visit the
Andean region, famous for its scenery, full of colorful towns and
beautiful mountains.
