Dear XMCA-ers-

David Barton is a terrific person/researcher and perhaps
some of you can take advantage of his project.

Dear Mike, Hi, how are you? I am writing to you now as I am discussing with
the publishers Routledge the possibility of starting a book series on
literacy. So, if you are about to begin or to finish a book on literacy I
hope you will contact me and consider this series. Also, if you have
colleagues who are writing appropriate books I hope you can recommend the
series to them or let me know. And, if you have an idea of a book on
literacy which needs to be written, maybe I can find and encourage a
possible author.

The aim of the series is to provide a focus for books on reading and writing
which consider literacy as a social practice and which situate reading and
writing in its broader institutional contexts. Intellectually the aim is to
develop and draw together this field. The books will be interdisciplinary
and the series will contain books covering a wide range of social and
institutional contexts. Routledge is well placed to bring out such a series
as it is known for good coverage in cultural and media areas, as well as
education and linguistics. The books will address contemporary themes such
as literacy and changing identities and the physical, material and visual
nature of literacies. Topics covered in the series could include:
New media; Literacies of the Internet
Bilingual literacy; Cross-cultural practices; World literacies; Literacies
and globalisation
Past and future practices; Historical basis of contemporary literacies;
Changing workplace literacies; Gender
Literacy, poverty and social exclusion
Literacy practices in the classroom; Changing schooling; The role of
literacy in education; Adult and life-long literacies
Language and literacy demands of different school and college subjects: e.g.
the language and literacy practices of geography, mathematics, etc.
Student writing; composition, rhetoric and practices
Role of literacy in professions and institutions, the law, social control,
the media
Literacy and critical discourse analysis
This should give you an idea of the potential range, and to see its
distinctiveness from existing series. If you have suggestions for further
topics, or any questions, please get in contact.

Other news is that Local Literacies, the book about the literacy in the
community project, is finally at the printers and I hope to have a copy,
with its bright yellow cover, in my hands by mid-March. I hope to visit the
States in the fall, maybe going to NCTE in November. Best wishes, David.
