This *may* help. There is a very good article
in _Cultuers of Computing_ (Leigh Star, ed.) called
"The Visual Culture of Engineers" by Kathryn Henderson.
If If you cannot find the book itself, you can look in
the Sociological Review, around 1995, where it
was first printed.
