Mary, The Margaret Donaldson book I have is 1979 Children's Minds. She
worked closely with Piaget and he applauded her expansion and clarification
and even the challenges to his life's work. I think if you go back farther
to Sapir and Whorf you will find interesting arguments about culture,
language and cognition. You might want to contact Dr. Steve Jackson at
slja.dcci.com He is a leading scholar in early childhood who is bilingual
and deals with these issues daily. He is very interested in Piaget and
Montessori. Also check out the sections on Language Varieties in
Children's Language and Learning by Judith Lindfors 1987.
I believe there are universals across all cultures because we are all human
beings, but I also believe in linguistic and cultural determinism to some
extent. Good luck.
