Sociolinguistics is the area I'm most interested in. My background is in
teaching ESL, but I'm also certified to teach regular English at the
secondary level. My present studies focus on cultural miscommunication in
the classroom. I am quite interested in communication problems between
minority students and their ethnic majority teachers and schools. I
believe cultural & communication differences keep minorities down in
classrooms across America. I have long been a follower of Shirley Brice
Heath and Lisa Delpit. I'm presently discovering the work Victoria
Purcell-Gates has done with urban Appalachians. It's all very interesting.
I look forward to hear what others have to say on these important topics.
