Dear Russell, Marty, and others,
I stand appropriately corrected on my false memory about Marty's study
results. However, I'm delighted to get a fuller, more accurate, and much
richer picture of what his results mean. I completely agree with Marty's
assessment of the value of classroom discourse in terms of the indirect
and well as direct messages it communicates. And I am very sympathetic
with any attempts to provide empirical evidence for this "mysterious"
process by which indirect messages about teaching and learning (and about
identity and other things as well) are communicated. Thanks for the
important information.
