Department of Teacher Education

The Department of Teacher Education in the College of Education at Michigan
State University is seeking candidates for an academic year tenure system
position at the rank of either Associate or Full Professor in language and
literacy education. This position begins Fall, 1998. The language and
literacy education community at Michigan State has earned a national
reputation for leadership in teaching, research and professional service.
Interests of the faculty associated with language and literacy community
include the social, cultural, and cognitive dimensions of literacy;
response to text; the role of literacy theory and literature study in the
education of beginning and experienced teachers; and the impact of language
and literacy policies and practices on student learning. Several members
of the faculty are participating in the recently funded OERI Center for the
Improvement of Early Reading Achievement. The faculty member hired for
this position is expected to collaborate with the language and literacy
faculty, as well as with faculty the rest of the department and college, in
building and sustaining high quality programs of teaching and scholarship
at all levels-preservice teacher education, graduate teacher education, and
doctoral education.

Responsibilities include: (1) conducting and publishing research on issues
related to language and literacy learning, teaching, policy and/or
curriculum; (2) contributing to efforts in the college to obtain external
funding for research and outreach programs in the areas of language and
literacy; (3) serving as research mentor to junior faculty in area of
language and literacy; (4) teaching, advising, and recruiting graduate
students with specializations in language and literacy; (5) teaching and
mentoring graduate
assistants who are learning how to teach preservice teachers and how to
conduct independent research; (6) participating in public service and
outreach efforts related to language and literacy at local, national, and
international levels, (7) working with colleagues in the program area,
department, and college to implement and refine programs of teaching and
research.

Desired qualifications include: (1) an earned doctorate in an area of
scholarship embracing the study of language and literacy; (2) evidence of
high quality scholarship in the social, cultural and/or cognitive
foundations of language and literacy; (2) demonstrated competence in and a
willingness to assume leadership for the teaching of graduate research
methods; (3) demonstrated ability to mentor doctoral students as they
develop competence in teaching and research; (4) commitment to and
experience with multi-disciplinary and/or school-university collaborations
for programs of research or professional development; (5) interest in the
continuing education of literacy teachers, especially in the development of
practitioners=92 capacity to study and learn from their own teaching; (6)
experience examining the teaching and learning of students who are
language-minority or English language learners, live in urban settings,
and/or exhibit special needs.

cultural dimensions of language and literacy learning; (3) evidence of
success as a teacher and promising researcher, (4) an interest in becoming
a mentor of graduate students and (5) an interest in working
collaboratively with colleagues in planning, implementing and improving
programs of scholarship and teaching, and (6) experience in working with
teachers, students, and/or teacher education candidates in culturally
diverse settings and an interest in the continuing education of literacy
teachers, especially in the development of practitioners=92 capacity to stud=
