Yea, Tony. "Othering" those who "Other" you is sound defensive
strategy for individuals & for groups - to a point. To the point
where more transformative strategies can be imagined. We are
reduced by our over-determinations of the other. Sigh. It's
work, to work against that closure. To stay open to a horizon
that emerges only in engagement. It's a question of deliberately
toggling (toggle is too simple, deliberately constantly adjusting)
what is foregrounded/backgrounded in interaction with the other.
And asymmetries complicate the work. And so does evil (yes, evil) -
the conscious aim to harm those who do not aim to hurt you and have
no power over you.
