I a 44 year old husband and father, and a nontraditional learner/researcher
working on my dissertation in curriculum and instruction at Boise State
University (part of the 1st cohort of the first doctoral program that the
University has offered). My research interest is in situated learning theory
in general and communities of practice in particular. I am doing a
qualitative study of two resident training programs here in Boise. Both
programs focus on primary care. One is more of an internal medicine
environment and the other a Family Practice oriented site. I also have a
business called Alternative Educational Services (see
http://netnow.micron.net/~cfran) My embryonic web site also has more
detailed information about my interests and research. The thinkers that I am
most indebted to for the direction and scope of my work are too numerous to
mention. Among the top however are, (in no particular order of importance):
Piaget and Vygotsky, David Bohm, JJ Gibson, Jean Lave et al, John Searle,
Marx, Habermas, George Lakoff, Mark Johnson, Eleanor Rosch, John Dewey,
Carl Jung, Franciso Varela, and A.N. Whitehead.

I am especially fascinated with how processes and artifacts germane to
cognitive functioning are distributed and categorized in the environment. My
focus for now is on how this plays out in hospital and clinic environments
in relation to physicians learning the psychosocial aspects of primary care
medicine.
