If the University of Chicago is typical, then it seems reasonable to suspect
that 'productivity' is a compound variable comprised, in approximate
ascending order of importance to administration, of: a) stellar graduate
students who go on to high profile careers; b) publications, speaking and
conferences; and c) soft money.

I have heard rumored (with no verification so it is hearsay) that in the
University of California system, a department that can not bring in at least
$400K of external grant money per tenured professor will, depending upon
other factors, either become a candidate for extinction or for merging with
another department.

I have no idea if this is true but it seems consistent with the general
heightening of anxiety and competitiveness in this brave new world.

Sorry to sound so sour; it's been a rough week.
