Catherine's request (via Mike) for good starting texts with a sociocultural
bent makes me remember my early days as a master's student where I was
introduced to James Spradley's delightful little methodology text __The
Ethnographic Interview__ (1979). The connection between
ethnography/anthropology and linguistics is made very clear. But the text
is a very easy and pleasantly written intro. to the whole business.
Catherine might then wish to put the companion text __Participant
Observation__ on a reading list.
The only problem: are these still in print? I don't know.
