I read Jay's review of Taussig a couple years ago, so I don't want to
risk remembering it wrong. His complaint in general was that Taussig
was confused theoretically about both mimesis and alterity. At the
time I had to conclude that he was right. Jay is one of the best
scholars writing in English of European social thought, at least in
my opinion. Each of his several books is a valuable reference. If
someone subscribes to VAR, perhaps they would be willing to make some
copies of Jay's review available. Alternatively, if you can wait a
bit then I can include Jay's review on the list for my next library
visit. Because the UCSD libraries are willing to deliver books to
department offices (hallelujah), I don't actually go in to the library
as much as I used to.
