Judy- thanks for your very thoughtful and well reasoned response to the
debate over whole language, direct instruction etc. If only it were
possible to reason together in good faith and in the pursuit of putting
the best knowledge to work for learners.

Today I got in the mail a clipping of a column by John Rosemund a
Knight-Ridder syndicated columnist containing a litany of attacks on
whole language. in the margin my unknown correspondent had
handwritten "Dear Mr. Goodman, I have read your books. I have also read
this column and thousands of pages of research, theory and literature on
many sides of the issue. You're wrong!"

I was also invited by Dallas Radio talk show to debate phonics.
I wish the issues in education were not so highly politicized- with
decisions being made by politicians and opinion makers and not educators.
