I agree with Jay's comment that Valerie Walkerdine's work on mathematics
instruction is relevant to our discussion about affect in learning. By
focusing on subtle differences in discourse about mathematics for boys
versus girls, she is able to connect seemingly minor events to a larger
set of social, cultural values that are largely invisible. Those values
involve associating abstract, logical discourse with the power of
controlling nature and ourselves.
