Paul-- Latour is a sociologist and there are long historical precedences
for effacing the psychological in that discipline. I am working out of
a CHAT (cultural-historical activity theory) perspective so my remark
about avoiding either/or was raised in that framework. Yrjo is one of
the commentators in the upcoming special issue in which Latour expands
the views seen in the Hutchins article and others respond. Perhaps we
will need some followup discussion!

In this connection, I have been mulling over how to respond to Jim
Martin because while I can see how to reconcile Halliday and CHAT
vis a vis weather/climate, the inside/consciousness, outside/material
distinction that you raised in your note, Jim, does NOT sit well.
I guess in my interepretion (other chat-ers bail at will!) consciousness
is the process of resolution of inside and outside in which both
inside, outside, and medium of interaction are mixtures of the ideal
and material. That may be confusing, but what I am most concerned about
