Betty,
I know little about the literature on active engagement, but I wondered
whether by using the word "active" you were opposing it to the kind
of engagement one observes in a reader lost in a book. I am not sure
we can measure engagement, or whether we really ought to make that a
central question. I was reminded by your query of the work of Michael
Csziksenmihalyi (I am sure I have spelled his name incorrectly) who
speaks of the "flow" experience, which seems to me a very intense form
of engagement. I could find some references if you don't know about them
already.
