I think I posted earlier on some traditions of democratic social skill
development, but for a critical edge that you are suggesting, I think Shirley
Brice Heath and Milbrey McLaughlin's work on youth organizations is just such
an example. These organizations are not simply "clubs" of the sort you
describe. They are engaged in the political work of reconstructing notions
of what it means to be a "youth" and "adult" in contemporary US societies.
