Ana's example of rules and children's play is fascinating. It reminds me of a
sequence on a video wemade at the Barbara taylor School where I asked a group
of kids to "play a game without rules." What happened was they settled on
playing cards after a very short time and they, to my mind, played without
rules but without "rule talk." that tis they played having rules (which of
course they made up from things they had heardand seen); theyengaged in
ruletalk. Iprefer an analysis that does not locate something as intrinsic or
extrinsic but as a language-game, in wittgenstein's sense. By engaging inrule
talk )before they know the societal rules very well) kids learn rules and what
they are.
