I'm curious how Phil's method of intermediating relates to the methods of
Ethnomethodology (EM). Garfinkel, in recent years, has also developed a
critique of the AI representationalist perspective, i.e.,

"A recent and compelling plenum is found in the intractability of common
sense that exhibits itself in furiously numerous, but so far unsuccessful
attempts in the computing industry to design computable representations of
ordinary human jobs."
(p. 13, Garfinkel, H. (1991). Respecification: Evidence for locally
produced, naturally accountable phenomena of order, logic, reason, meaning,
method, etc. in and of the essential haecceity of immortal society (I)--an
announcement of studies. In G. Button (Ed.) _Ethnomethodology and the human
sciences_ (pp. 10-19). Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press.)

Could someone out there in XMCA-land, with a deeper understanding of EM,
layout the basic similarities and differences? Many thanks, ---Tim
